School nursing, a specialized practice of nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Adopted by the NASN Board of Directors in February 2017

Among many other services, school nurses maintain student health records, perform state-required health screenings, administer doctor-prescribed medications, perform nursing assessments and procedures, respond to school illnesses and accidents, assist physicians and dentists with school examinations, provide health counseling and referral, conduct health-related classroom instruction, and serve as a parent and staff consultant in health-related matters. Certified school nurses also participate in 504, CST and IEP meetings and develop Individualized Health Plans (IHP's)for students in need. School nurses do not make medical diagnoses as this is properly the function of your child's primary care physician.
